Chance2eat is a charitable trust primarily set up in support of Matisse Reid who suffers from a chronic and often debilitating condition called chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo obstruction(CIIPO).
CIIPO is the name given to a relatively unknown group of disorders that cause impaired gastrointestinal mobility. Normally, co-ordinated peristaltic contractions of the stomach and the intestines transport ingested food along the gut. In pseudo-obstruction the co-ordination of such muscular contractions is partially or completely lost. This results in impaired or blocked passage through the gut. Uncoordinated motor activity leads to impaired digestion of food and impaired absorption of nutrients. For Matisse this means she can not digest at all and is totally reliant of her nutrients to survive being delivered directly to her blood stream via intra venous (IV) feeding.
Recurrent and severe abdominal pain, pronounced abdominal distension and vomiting are the most common symptoms for Matisse. The cause of pain is not well understood, therefore, treatment is very much trial and error which is extremely distressing. Liver failure, blood septicemia and limited IV access are all high risks for Matisse. As there is no cure for CIIPO Matisse requires a small bowel transplant (smt). SMT is not available in New Zealand or Australia so Matisse, her parents and three siblings need to travel to the United States for this surgery.
our organisation has been established to promote awareness about chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo obstruction and to raise funds for Matisse and her family for non funded costs associated with small bowel transplant.
